Wow! It's been nearly a month since I've posted. The telecom here is pretty slow and I've only recently had access to the internet. Anyway, this is kind of a silly post, but something that I didn't want to lose. In the past few days, I've had to call Germany and, in addition to figuring out how to get an outside line from the base, I had to figure out how to dial a German number from an Italian landline. I found a helpful website from Rick Steves and I thought that I'd share it. Here's the link.
It's a minor thing, but it's very helpful when you need to talk to someone in Germany.

Hi Lt. Mowry,
I came across your blog, and your sponsor's blog while searching for information on life as a USAF JAG. How does the first assignment selection work? (how do they decide where you are posted for your first tour?)
I see there is a preference sheet, but are there some general trends to keep in mind (e.g. perhaps Guam is generally not considered a very desirable tour location so more of likelihood of receiving first tour there if listed as 1st choice)
Thanks,
Gene
Honestly, I don't know how they choose assignments. People have tried to guess, but it's a closely-held secret. They say is a matter of luck, timing, and suitability. I suspect, however, that, just like the DOJ, there's some kind of ranking system as well. Who knows. All I know is that we were very fortunate.
